Explore Rome with an Italian photographer
Photography workshop, Rome
September 14th – September 17th, 2012
All travellers interested in photography are welcome to this new and innovative workshop. All you need is a digital camera (any type).

What is the "here and now" – moment in photography?
What is the relationship between the photographer and the object or person being photographed? Come and explore the answers to the questions.
We will work alongside Italian photographer Gabriele Micalizzi in various neighbourhoods of Rome, including the more famous ones as well as in lesser known parts of this ancient city: people, buildings, details, moods.
Images of Rome can be found in many places: photo albums, newswires, movies, postcards and, as a result of that, in our minds and memories.
The golden morning sun high above the eternal city, ruins where the footprints of the past can still be traced, scores of scooters and street sweepers are only some of the countless scenes that have always inspired photographers, amateurs and professionals alike. Indeed, Rome is a dynamo for images and the imagination.
In his own work, workshop instructor, photographer Gabriele Micalizzi focuses in his work on revolutions and conflicts all around the world. This challenging work has instilled in him a new approach to the things and the people he photographs.
Gabriele will begin the workshop with an exploration of the relationship between the photographer and the object being photographed. By taking hundreds or possibly thousands of photos we will learn how to use the camera in the creation of our own story. Gabriele’s guidance will be invaluable in the process. You – the photographer – will become part of the story which you are recording. This story always teaches the photographer unknown aspects of about her/himself as well as the world around you. Gabriele will assist you to capture moments that touch something in ourselves, something that words can’t explain.
Gabriele Micalizzi was born in Milan in 1984. While studying at ISA (Public Art Institute) in Monza he met photographer Renato Zuccolin; this meeting made him devote himself solely to photography. Following his graduation Gabriele worked for New Press, Milan and began publishing his photographs in the most famous and most widely circulated newspapers in Italy.
Gabriele continued studying photography in Milan (Photo Accademy John Kaverdash and the "Scuola di Arte Applicata del Castello Sforzesco"). Since 2007 he has been a member of Cesuralab, a collective based in Milan.
Gabriele has run photography workshops with MAGNUM-photographers such as Alex Majoli, Paolo Pellegrin, Lise Sarfati, Alex Soth, Chris Anderson. He also works for NYTimes Magazine. His photographs featuring areas of conflict have shown widely in Italy and internationally, both in galleries and in print.
