In the footsteps of Scandinavian artists in Rome

This art tour, tailored for ArsMondo by Maria Stella Bottai Ph.D., focuses on tracing the footsteps of Scandinavian artists in Rome – from the Renaissance until today. Maria Stella’s doctoral dissertation explores the influence of Italian renaissance art on the Finnish art.

This tour is suitable for those who want to experience a dreamlike return to old Roman grandeur and those who want to know how Scandinavian artists used to and still live in today’s Rome. Every day will be finished by enjoying local culinary dishes.

Program:

The 1st day

We will begin our exciting walking tour from Gianicolo. A spectacular view of the city of Rome opens up from there and it is also one of the famous seven hills of Rome. We will walk down the hill, exploring the places where Scandinavian artists used to find inspiration and still do to this very day. These places include: The Institutum Romanum Finlandiae in the Renaissance Villa Lante, San Pietro in Montorio and Late Baroque Palazzo Corsini, where Christina of Sweden lived and died in 1689. You will also visit the botanical gardens which used to be the garden of Palazzo Corsini and the museum of the palace.

Lunch will be enjoyed in Trasteverians’ favourite restaurant. For dinner we will go to Campo de’ Fiori.

The 2nd day

We will start by enjoying lunch on the terrace of Galleria Nazionale di Arte Moderna. With Maria Stella we have a unique chance to explore Galleria Nazionale di Arte Moderna, which is situated next to Villa Borghese, hosting the biggest collection of Italian art from the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum collections are Maria Stella’s area of expertise. Because Maria Stella works at the museum, she can tell you all about the modern art collections. After the museum tour you can take a walk around the picturesque Villa Borghese and have an espresso in the popular Casa del Cinema’s outdoor café.

We will finish the tour by enjoying dinner together in the most wonderful Sabatini, a restaurant at Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere.
