Painting Workshops - Rome

This workshop takes you right into the centre of Rome and its local artists’ lives. Both beginners and advanced art practitioners are welcome to this popular workshop.

We can tailor this workshop according to your group's wishes and availability.

Unforgettable Trastevere

The workshop takes place in Trastevere, the city’s beautiful artists’ quarter, where cobblestoned streets line old stone houses covered in grapevine creepers. Old trees give shadow to small cafes and boutiques, while street artists can be spotted literally everywhere. Once you have experienced Trastevere, you will never forget it.

Our workspace is situated in a peaceful corner of Trastevere and belongs to an old Roman Catholic church. Looking for inspiration, you can also paint on the terrace or go for walks along the narrow streets of Trastevere.

The workshop instructor is painter Hannu Palosuo who lives and works in Rome.

Programme

The 1st day

On this first day we will seek inspiration and ideas for the paintings to be worked on in the days to come.

While in the morning you can explore Rome on your own, at noon we will meet as a group to have lunch. After the lunch we will visit Rome’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MACRO Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Roma) and Museum of the Arts of the 21st Century (MAXXI Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo). From there we will head to the region of Appia to visit Hannu’s studio. Afterwards, we will join together for a traditional Italian meal at Taverna dell’allegria.

The 2nd day

The first proper workshop day begins with getting to know the workspace belonging to an old Roman Catholic church. You will also get a chance to look at Hannu’s internationally acclaimed paintings. We will start painting with a relaxed Roman touch, using acrylic paint for practical reasons: the work will dry up quickly and you can take it with you when you leave Rome. Also, the acrylic paint will enable us to continue painting the following day. Hannu will discuss and plan the works with you.

For lunch we will enjoy Italian home cooking in the International Women’s House (men are also welcome :) in the idyllic Trastevere. After lunch and a cup of espresso we will be ready to return to the workspace to continue painting.

The 3rd day

This day is again devoted to the workshop. You can paint on a terrace, enjoy Roman delicacies for lunch, relax into the mood of Trastevere and, most importantly, make the most of Hannu’s guidance and long-term experience.

The 4th day

Free day. You can either work on your own at the workspace or take the day off.

The 5th day

What could be better than starting a morning by painting in Rome’s Trastevere? All morning will be dedicated to it. Lunch will be a group event at one of the best restaurants in Trastevere. In the afternoon we will have a critique together, assessing what we have done and learnt during the workshop.

Participants will bring with them: paints, paintbrushes and working clothes

If you wish, we are also happy to book your accommodation.
